J-E-T-S BRETT BRETT BRETT

8 08 2008

Well, it’s sort of big news, and everybody has heard about it. Brett Favre is now a member of the New York Jets. This saddens me quite a bit because I am a very large Packers fan. It will be very strange for me to see another quarterback under center for the Packers, I was less than 2 years old the last time somebody besides Brett Favre started a game for the Packers. So it goes without saying that this season is going to be a little bit strange for me.

Despite the strangeness, I am very optimistic about the outcome of this season. We were 13-3 and made the NFC Championship last year and I like what I have seen from Aaron Rodgers on the field so far. It seems that every other Packers fan has forgotten what he did against the Cowboys last year, 18 completions for 201 yards and a touchdown. On top of the passing statistics he showed the ability to move around outside the pocket more effectively than Favre has been able to in many years.

Now don’t get me wrong, as much as I support Aaron Rodgers, I am extremely disappointed that I won’t get to see Mr. Favre in green and gold this season. Favre is the greatest quarterback of all time and that shouldn’t even be debateable, the man holds every career pasing record there is, he has a superbowl victory, and the Packers only have one losing season with him at quarterback.

Anyway, this season promises to be exciting.

Wizard Rock

1 08 2008

So today I stumbled over an amazing music scene that I was completely ignorant to. It is called Wizard Rock, it is rock music all about Harry Potter. Now, this is especially exciting because I LOVE Harry Potter and rock music… It’s a match made in Heaven. There is a very large number of bands that comprise this very amazing music scene including (but not limited to) Harry and the Potters, Draco and the Malfoys, The Hermione Crookshanks Experiment, The Parselmouths, Ginny and the Heartbreakers, The Basilisk in Your Pasta, The Remus Lupins, The Whomping Willows, and MY PERSONAL FAVORITE Roonil Wazlib.

Words cannot describe the excitement I am feeling right now. I fancy myself a pretty large Harry Potter fan, although I did start my love for Rowling’s wonderful series rather late (I read books 1-7 last August-January) and have only recently (3 weeks ago) seen the movies. I know that my late start may lessen my credibility to the veterans of Harry Potter fandom, but that doesn’t change the fact that the Harry Potter books are totally awesome. Anyway, WIZARD ROCK!! it’s amazing and every HP fan needs to hear it.

Indigenous People in North Dakota: How Did They Do It?

1 08 2008

I can’t believe that people survived in North Dakota prior to modern technology. The weather here is so ridiculously bipolar that anybody being forced to exist out in it would likely go crazy. In the summer it is nothing special to walk into a department store (or your choice of building without easy sight of the outside world) leaving the elements, a steamy 90 plus degrees without a cloud in the sky, only to walk out of that deparment store (or your building of choice) to find that it is raining and the temperature has dropped to a brisk 75 (which feels alot colder than it sounds when you are soaking wet). For me the worst part of such an event is that now, all of a sudden, I am dressed completely inappropriately and now have to finish whatever errands or frivolous flights of fancy I had planned being wet and cold. How would the Native Americans living here have handled it? (I ask this as a very ignorant being, as I have not done much if any research as to the life styles of Native Americans in the area.) Now, I don’t believe a native would have had the ability to change their clothes on a whim, a change in the weather would probably mean that they would have to remain wet for the remainder of the day. All of their things would be wet, and potentially ruined. I can’t imagine how uncomftorable it would be to be incapable of escaping the elements and entering a nice dry, heated/air conditioned house.

And then there are the winters. The average temperature here in January is negative 2 degrees (f). And that isn’t even including the wind chill, which has a tendency to make it feel a heckuvalot colder. Last winter there were several days where the temperature was negative 50 degrees (f) with the wind chill factor. You really don’t want to be outside on those days, and if you can’t avoid it, you cover up really well. How could somebody survive a winter like that without a heated place of residence. I can’t imagine that mud houses (or whatever else the Native North Dakotans lived in)  would have been nearly as effective at sheltering one from the intensely cold winters as a modern house.

I have reached the end of this post and I have one main fear, that this may seem as though I am looking down upon the way that Native Americans lived before they were modernized and forced to be like the invading Europeans. This is not the case at all, the purpose of this post was to discuss the ridiculous weather that North Dakotans have to endure, and to highlight how clever and adaptive the Native Americans must have had to be to survive. I have unending respect for them.

Introductions.

30 07 2008

Well, I’m back already. “why so soon?” you may ask. The answer to that question is that I am a wee bit anxious, I know that I only started my blog today but I want it to have a bit more substance than “hey look I started a blog.” So anyway, I was surveying my list of things to do with my blog and I was able to place check marks next to such categories as “create” “first post” and “make pretty” but I found that I was incapable of checking “introduce myself” off of the list. I am also incapable of checking off “write a post worth reading” but, who knows, I may never accomplish that wonderful task. But without further ado, I am going to allow myself to make my list much less daunting.

Hello, my name is Adam, I was born 17 years, 8 months, and 19 days ago, I live in West Fargo, North Dakota (It’s directly west of Fargo, infact I need only walk to the end of my block to be in Fargo) And yes, before you ask, I do love the movie Fargo. Everytime I leave town I get baraged with questions about what life in Fargo is like. No, not everybody talks like they do in the movie (although there are a few) and no, I’ve never met anybody who died by way of woodchipper.  I plan on using this space to discuss life in Fargo, including any and all frustrations it presents as well as the few miniscule things I happen to like about it, so if that interests you, stay tuned, and if not, I will post about many things aside from my land of habitation.

Alright, now that I have established that I am from the mythical land of Fargo, I do believe it is about time I told you all about my interests. I consider myself to be a very large theatre nerd. There is nothing I enjoy more than performing, infact there aren’t too many things I like better than rehearsing. I absolutely will not say that I am the best actor, singer, or dancer there is, but I doubt you will find another person who enjoys it as much as I do. Musical theatre is definitely my favorite type of theatre, it just seems to me that if you aren’t singing and dancing, you’re cheating. Now I know that song and dance very often is inappropriate for a particular show and I do thoroughly enjoy straight plays as well. I am sure that the theatre will be a prevelant topic in the future. Now, as well as the theatre I love music, although I listen primarily to the cast albums from musicals, I do have an intense love for good rock music. Some of my favorite artists include but are not limited to Weezer, The White Stripes,  The Beatles, The Clash, Arctic Monkeys, and Regina Spektor. You could say that I am a bit of an audiophile, I can’t stand sitting in a room that doesn’t have music playing and when I do find myself in such unpleasant circumstances I make my own music, be that by singing, or whistiling, or what have you. Yes, incase you were wondering what direction this post was headed in, books are next. I love to read. (I think the word love is being over used in the post and as a result the effectiveness of the word has been diminished. oh well I don’t feel like finding a new verb) My favorite books are sci-fi and fantasy (although a bit of romance here and there never hurt anybody)

Now that we’ve made it this far I will move along to the slightly less important aspects of my life, I believe this will wind up looking like a large list with lots of commas and then the word “and” right before the last part of the list. But, considering I haven’t written this section of the post yet, I couldn’t say for sure… I enjoy watching sports (including pro wrestling). My favorite television shows are Heroes, Gilmore Girls, and Will and Grace. I can’t stand the colors black and brown together. I don’t have a favorite color, although I am partial to the colors teal and green. I have three best friends. One of those best friends is gay, so homosexuality is an important issue to me. I am in choir. I have an excessively large number of sweaters and shoes (over 40 sweaters, over 20 pairs of shoes). I like to look nice all the time, regardless of what I’m doing. I stutter and twitch when I get too tired. I used to write alot of poetry, but have recently cut back. I really enjoy reading poetry. I am a sucker for a chick flick. My favorite foods include corn dogs, pizza, and peanut butter crunch. Converse shoes are my favorite. I am a very big fan of the Green Bay Packers. I lift weights and run most days. I play softball. I like hair products. My parents both used to be clowns. My grandfather is a really good painter. Cute socks make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. My favorite movies include Juno, Cabaret, Singin’ in the Rain, About a Boy, My Fair Lady, and Catch Me If You Can. I enjoy looking at myself in the mirror a bit too much. My father is the biggest computer nerd you’ll ever meet, he is also a bonafide genius. Sports dominated my life until my sophomore year of high school when I joined the drama club. My favorite board game is Trivial Pursuit. I prefer tortilla chips to potato chips. My two favorite beverages are milk and orang juice. I don’t drink soda. When I did drink soda my favorite was Cherry Coke. I love angel food cake. I love hats, but hate to wear them. I like long walks on the beach and getting caught in the rain… oh wait… I think that is enough about me. That big list of things about me wound up not going exactly as planned, there were more periods than commas and the “and” wound up being non-existant.

Well, that’s me, if there’s anything else you want to know… just ask.

Old Friends

30 07 2008

Hello blogosphere, it’s been quite some time since our last encounter. Considering you and I are old friends I think a hand shake or maybe even a hug is in order.(a sniff of the ol’ rump would be welcomed as well, but considering neither you nor I are dogs…) Now that pleasantries are out of the way I suppose this would be a wonderful time for us to get down to business. I view this initial post as being a cup of coffe shared by two old friends from back home when they suddenly realize that their epic journeys have found them settling in the same distant realm. And considering this cup of coffee is being consumed by both of us, I expect you to be awakened and ready to proceed with life as new, old friends.
